"It’s a chance for me to bring my extensive database and broad experience to help address the constraints in your business."
—Verne Harnish, author of Scaling Up (Rockefeller Habits 2.0)
"The CEO Boot Camp is a highly practical investment, with actionable content for both the CEO and their #2. Across the three days we spent time not only learning, but also working on the business. The depth of insights into all aspects of business (culture, strategy, execution) continue to inform decisions our leadership team is making today as we scale our 2200+ employee organization toward our billion dollar goal."
—Matthew Dent, YPOer, President and Chief Executive Officer, Buffalo-Rock Pepsi
"THANK YOU!!! Verne, John and Ruth for the best get together ever! We normally say words like “ the best ever”, etc. etc… so I’m without words on how to describe what this trip did for me!!! Just know that I have never been so inspired… and so well guided! EVER "
—Ricardo Landa, Founder & CEO, LandCorp
"We think we have uncovered a market segment that 1. is extremely profitable, 2. is completely overlooked by the industry, and 3. breaks an industry constraint. We wouldn't have been even thinking about it if it weren't for the Boot camp. We are getting ready to roll out our offering and I have never been more excited about the business than I am now!.. It was the best education experience I've ever had."
—Tom Bemiller, CEO The Aureus Group
"The CEO Boot Camp was an INCREDIBLE experience for my #2 and me! The intimate setting created the space for new thoughts and creativity to flow freely. My company has been able to put the ideas into practice IMMEDIATELY as we roll out our 3rd quarterly theme, driving alignment with our 72 employees. We can hardly remember what it was like prior to our daily huddles, which have fueled greater communication and a quicker pace throughout our entire organization… not a day goes by without someone talking SCALE. CEO Boot Camp is a true only in YPO experience* you MUST experience! Without question, best executive education investment we’ve ever made! "
—John Allen, President, Brown Haven Homes

John Ratliff - Guest CEO, Marathon, FL
John founded Appletree Answers in 1995 in his two-bedroom apartment in Wilmington, Del., as a traditional telephone answering service. He grew the company through a series of acquisitions to 24 US- based locations and 650 employees when it was sold to a strategic buyer in June, 2012. By that point, it had evolved into a high-end customer service contact center that employed tools such as phone, email and chat response.
Passionate about strategy, Ratliff used the methodologies of the Rockefeller Habits to reduce turnover at the company from the industry average of 110% to around 18% in the four years between 2008 and 2012. One key initiative was the company’s Dream On initiative, a “Make-A-Wish- Foundation” style program for employees in need.
Appletree’s high retention rate allowed the company to manage its exponential growth while driving tremendous EBITDA and revenue gains. In one sign of its employees’ enthusiasm, the company won the We love Our Workplace Video Contest, run by the prestigious Great Place to Work Institute, in 2012. Ultimately it was Appletree’s focus on employee engagement that drove its valuation on exit.
Ratliff is now CEO of GazellesPRO, the inner circle of Gazelles companies, as well as managing director of STS Capital Partners, an international mergers and acquisitions firm. He is also active in Virgin Unite, Richard Branson’s charitable foundation focused on improving the employee experience. In that capacity, he is involved with its initiative on people and innovation.
Ratliff now speaks frequently with companies of all sizes to diagnose problems in their employee retention and morale and to drive improvements. He also brings expertise in using a business’s operating system to leverage the effectiveness of the management team.
Ratliff has a BSBA in Marketing and Finance from the University of Delaware. He lives in Wilmington, Del., with his wife Lynne and their three young children. In his free time, he flies his TBM 850 single-engine turbo prop plane. He can be reached at drichmond@align5.com.
